Porthtowan Retains UK Open Surfboat Titles

Porthtowan SLSC confirmed their status as the dominant force in British surfboats with the club’s mens and ladies teams winning gold at the UK Open at Saunton Sands, north Devon on 28 July. Both are also the current European Champions and lead the Summer Series league event.

In tricky 2-3’ onshore conditions the two crews had to work hard for their victories. “We won two of the opening three rounds,” said Kim-Marie Clothier who rowed at bow in the ladies boat, appropriately called Black & Blue. “Perranporth beat us in one of them and we weren’t sure how much the other crews had held back for the final.”

As it transpired Porthtowan were level with their great Cornish rivals until the turning buoy where they managed to open a gap and then surf a wave back to the beach.

In the mens event Porthtowan’s Blue Bali almost came unstuck when they were caught too far inside by a sneaker set and nearly rolled. That misfortune again allowed their rivals from Perranporth to win a heat. “It was difficult out there,” said stroke, Nick Healey. “Those waves could take anyone out.”

By the final, however, the Blue Bali crew had recovered its composure and won comfortably from Bude Barracudas with the Perranporth crew taking bronze.

The next event is the European Championships which will be held at Perranporth on Saturday 1 September. For further information see
